Your vehicle's timing belt, also called a cambelt, is a rubber belt whose job it is to synchronize the crankshaft and camshaft, so their rotation occurs at the correct intervals. When it does, your engine's pistons can pump, its intake and exhaust valves can open and close, and other components can move like they're supposed to. In short, timing belts keep engines running without their parts colliding.

Timing belt replacement can be difficult to diagnose, though; there aren't very many signs to tell you when one is going out. Of course, there are still some symptoms that you can look for, and they're fairly easy to spot. They include:

  • Engine misfires, often without warning, indicating belt breakdown or slippage
  • Ticking sounds coming from the engine
  • Oil leaks at the front of the motor
  • Engine performance issues at lower rpm
  • Excessive exhaust smoke and fumes
  • An engine won't crank/start

If the timing belt fails completely, however, timing misalignment becomes almost certain, and your engine will most likely lose power and shut down. The worst-case scenario in this case: engine damage, namely, to its valves and cylinder heads. If you've got a timing chain, when it breaks, it'll be with a loud crack.

So, how often do timing belts need to be replaced? Your owner's manual's maintenance schedule can answer that question, usually with a mileage benchmark. For newer models, it's generally every 100,000 miles or so, and for older models, it's about every 60,000 miles. Today's timing chains, however, get built to last, often for an engine's lifetime.
