  • Be less specific. Example: brake instead of ceramic brake.

Your engine burns fuel for power, creating noxious byproducts in the process. Your exhaust system safely removes them, capturing what's harmful before releasing cleaner gases into the air. The process is as follows:

  • Contaminants go through the catalytic converter, where metals like platinum, rhodium, and palladium capture and contain them.
  • The toxic molecules are split into oxygen and nitrogen; the N2 gets trapped, while the O2 passes through.
  • Hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are burned up.
  • Water vapor and carbon dioxide (CO2) are released.
  • The exhaust manifold collects the fumes and sends them down the exhaust pipe.
  • The resonator and muffler help ensure proper airflow while cutting engine noise.
  • The muffler's tail pipe expels the cleaner fumes.

Unfortunately, exhausts don't last forever. They sometimes go bad and fail, often from age and use. Luckily, there are signs that'll tell you that you've got problems. They include:

  • A lit Check Engine light
  • A drop in fuel efficiency
  • Unusual noises coming from the muffler and exhaust pipe
  • Rotten-egg smells

If you're seeing any, do a careful exhaust inspection to figure out which parts may be the causes and replace any that the results call for. Otherwise, catalytic converters last 160,900 kilometers or so typically, while mufflers and resonators last anywhere from 2 to 4 years.
