  • Search by a part name. Example: water pump.
  • Be less specific. Example: brake instead of ceramic brake.
  • Remove information such as make, year or model.

Your vehicle has many belts and hoses. They move its various parts. Belts move them mechanically. They turn the crankshaft, among others. There are several types of belts. Serpentine belt and drive belts, for example, move parts across a variety of systems, from your alternator and power steering pump to your AC compressor and water pump. Timing belts and chains, for another example, help turn camshafts, which enable engine valves and pistons to coordinate. Even your climate control system and cooling fan are run in part by belts.

Hoses also move auto parts, but hydraulically, using liquid pressure. There are several kinds of these, too. Radiator hoses, for example, allow antifreeze to travel between your engine and radiator. Heater core hoses, for another example, enable hot coolant to move through the heating system in your car HVAC, warming your cabin. In older vehicles, fuel hoses connect the gas tank to the engine. Brake hoses, on the other hand, let brake fluid through your brake system to charge brake calipers, while air intake hoses help the engine regulate its ratio of air and fuel. There are also hoses for many other systems, such as oil coolers, positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valves, and more.

If your vehicle isn't running right or it's disabled, worn belts and hoses might be to blame. Signs that might be the case include:

  • Visible looseness
  • Obvious damage
  • Screeching or chirping belts
  • Fluid leaks around a hose
  • Leaking fluid under your vehicle
  • Battery and interior lighting problems
  • Engine misfires
  • An overheating engine
  • Failed starts
  • Complete systems failure

So, how often do you need to change belts otherwise? The answer: it varies by the kilometrage specified in your owner's manual's maintenance schedule. Most hoses, you'll need to replace every 4 years. If you have a timing chain, though, it should last your engine's lifetime.
