OEM Ford Oil Filters
Oil filters help remove contaminants from engine oil, keeping it as clean as possible. How the process works starts with an oil pump, which pushes oil into the filter's fibers. The fibers capture pollutants, and the pump pushes cleaner oil back into the motor.
Simple, right? If you've ever gone to buy an oil filter online and done a little research, however, you probably already know just how many types there are for sale out there -- which can complicate things. For instance, filter media ranges widely, from paper to synthetic fiber. That's not to mention by flow rate. Full-flow filters, for example, can trap particles as small as 25 microns, whereas lower-flow filters have secondary media that can catch those between a minuscule 5-10 microns. The list goes on.
Unfortunately, though, no matter what kind you've got, it can clog, wear out, and break down. When that happens, impurities can build up in your engine. When they do, they can wear out its pump, the pump's bearings, and other parts.
Luckily, the symptoms of a bad oil filter can be pretty easy to spot. They include:
- Dirtier exhaust emissions
- Low oil pressure, usually indicating a leak
- Metallic sounds coming from the engine Engine spluttering
To avoid that result, be sure to change your oil filter regularly. When to do it is uncomplicated -- you can take care of it during every oil change, or every other time you flush and replace your motor oil. That's usually every 4,800 to 8,000 kilometers or every 3 months, whichever comes first. One exception: if you've got an extended-life oil filter. These can last as many as 16, 000 km or so.
By now, you're probably asking what oil filter you need. The answer depends on dimensions -- the necessary thread and gasket sizes listed in your owner's manual. The bottom line: it's critical that you install a filter that fits your vehicle. Put on the wrong one, and you'll end up with oil leaks. Worse yet, the filter could fall off, and, more often than not, that results in serious engine damage.
